When Do You Have Time to Market Your Firm?

“The bad news is that time flies. The good news is that you’re the pilot.”

That quote (attributed to author Michael Atlshuler) is both clever and very true.  Time is that precious resource that we cannot save or store, or keep for a rainy day.  It just keeps ticking, and our mission is to make the most of it.

The problem is, if you are running a healthy legal practice, you have very little time for anything but servicing your clients’ cases.  While being busy is a good problem to have, there is a very good chance that you are probably constantly putting marketing and business development on the back burner.  We know it is true because so many lawyers have that very same problem.

In our last article on ethics, we talked about the notion that lawyers should devote 20 to 25% of their time to marketing.  That can be hard to do, yet without letting the world know that you exist, your healthy legal practice could start looking not-so-healthy.

So, in this article, we will talk about a few techniques that you can put in place to get back some of that lost time and put business development on the front burner, where it belongs.  If, after reading this article, you want more information on small law firm marketing , then we welcome you to reach out to Oamii , the premier internet marketing company in Florida.

1. Start Proactive, Not Reactive

How many times has it happened where you planned to get one thing done during the day, and yet something that lands on your desk in the morning derails the rest of your day?

One way to avoid that “derailing” from happening on a regular basis is to begin your day by quickly sketching out your tasks for the day – noting which are “must do’s” and which are “should do, but not urgent.”  Then, as your day goes by, check back to make sure that you are on track to get the “must do’s” done.

That is what is called being proactive with your day.  That is the opposite of reactive.  When it comes to being reactive, emails are the worst culprit.  The moment you wade into your emails, you will find that you get pulled in many directions and never get back to your plan.  So, with emails and other reactive demands, try prioritizing those demands (into one of three choices: (i) deal with quickly now, (ii) file away, or (iii) delegate) and then bring yourself back to your plan for the day.

2. Don’t Do Two Things at Once

Multitasking sounds great, but it really isn’t a thing.  Multitasking is simply going back and forth between multiple tasks.  The time going between one task and another actually is lost time because your brain needs to change gears each time the focus is shifted.

Thus, try keeping only one thing on your desk at a time.  This “uni-tasking” will likely mean more efficient use of time getting things done.

3. Avoid Perfection Paralysis and Delegate More

It is tough, but try to make sure that you do not obsess on getting something letter perfect if perfection provides only nominal benefit.  In other words, if B+ gets the job done, and A+ adds no real added value but takes twice as long, make a call as to whether “gets the job done,” is what is necessary.

Finally, you can decrease time on client service by delegating to staff, so you can increase your time on client development.

By practicing some good time management tools, you will be able to free up some valuable time to market your practice digitally and otherwise.
